The snorkel can be very important in a variety of situations such as waiting at the surface for your boat in high swells or when you need to do a surface swim to the boat/dive destination. It is also very helpful for swimming with any dolphins or whale sharks that you may come across.

For freediving however you would look for a snorkel without a purge valve and any snorkel without any sharp bends or ridges.
