Freediving is about inward power, discipline and control. If you’ve always wanted to enter the underwater world quietly, on your own terms, staying as long as your breath allows, and observe aquatic life, up close and personal, then freediving is for you. It’s a great way to explore the underwater world when you’re not able to scuba dive or if scuba diving just isn’t your thing.

To enroll in a PADI Freediver course:

  • You must be at least 12 years old.
  • You need adequate swimming skills and comfort in the water.
  • No prior experience is required.

Course Outline

The PADI Freediver course consists of three main phases:

  • Knowledge development about freediving principles through independent study with the PADI Freediver Touch™ (or your instructor may conduct class sessions).
  • Confined water session to learn breath-hold techniques as well as static and dynamic apnea. Goal – static apnea of 90 seconds and dynamic apnea of 25 metres.
  • Open water sessions to practice free immersion and constant weight freedives, plus proper buddy procedures. Goal – constant weight freedive of 10 meters.
  • Basic safety guidelines for being in and around the water.

Equipment

In the PADI Freediver course, you learn to use a mask, snorkel, fins, and may also use a wetsuit and weight belt. Using gear designed specifically for freediving is best, however, in this course, you may be able to use snorkeling equipment you already own.

Getting Started

As soon as you sign up (added the course to your cart and payment cleared) with Phoenix Divers to do your PADI Skin Diver Course, your Instructor will then contact you about scheduling time for in-water training.

Ask your instructor about the PADI Discover the Underwater World video and companion piece – The Snorkeler’s Field Guide. Although not required for the course, these videos have great tips that will come in handy when you hit the water and the field guide covers different underwater environments along with common aquatic life.

  • This Course Requires 2 - 3 days of practical assessment
  • Normally over weekends but possible for during the week training

Your Phoenix Divers - PADI Freediver Course includes:

  • Full gear rental
  • First-rate Certification
